Or do I need to buy one of those laundry markers? Did anyone ever have it run in the wash?

Yes. We do it not infrequently for camp.
The Sharpie can bleed through the clothes, and its always messy on socks. Maybe a laundry marker would be better, but I've never used one.

Sharpie makes a laundry marker. It is definitely better than a regular permanent marker.
