Well, after having assumed that my domestic assistant knew how to do laundry, I am beginning to think she needs some guidelines. Before I prevail on our very kind and helpful Spanish speaking mothers to help me with the translation, I'd like to make sure my list covers all bases! So please tell me if anything comes to mind that should be added to the following:

1. Sort clothing into the following categories:
Sheets - hot water - dry
Towels - hot water - dry
Whites - warm, hot once in a while -
- shirts: put in dryer for a few minutes, then hang up each one while the dryer is still on for the rest.
- delicates - hang up to dry
Lights - cold - hang up to dry
Darks - cold water - hang to dry

2. Check every pocket and remove tissues, pens, crayons etc
(Removing lint is optional?)
3. All clothing - inspect for stains, rub with pre-wash or soap. Rub shirt collars & cuffs.

It is important not to fill the washing machine and dryer with too many pieces of clothing.
The clothing will be cleaner when there is room for them to move around in the machine

What have I forgotten? I don't use fabric softener..

Every few days, take a shmatteh and wipe around the top of the machine, the top of the basket, and the softener/bleach dispenser.

Empty the lint after each dryer load.

To prevent mildew, be sure to leave washing machine door open when not in use.

If you have a front loader, inside the gasket should be cleaned- can't tell you how many mildewy socks I found in there

I think this may apply only to front-loaders.

Examine clothing carefully before drying or ironing. Heat may set in a stain and make it impossible to remove later.
