I'm making a birthday cake. I can make the cake but I am clueless about decorating it. I never decorated a cake before. Its going to be a rather large cake. I would like to split it in half and put in frosting/filling.
I need a easy recipe for frosting.
I need an easy recipe for the filling.
Any cake decorating experts here?
I also want to write on the cake . How can it be done professionally?
Also does anyone know how to make a nice dessert out of jello? using a cake pan or mold?

try www.baking911.com and www.wilton.com for decorating ideas... I started there a lot before I started playing with my own designs.. it's ton of fun and dont feel dejected if it 'flops' the cake will still be eaten(can always change it into a mud cake).. you'll get better with each attempt

put jelly in the middle
for frosting mix 1 cup crisco shortening to 2 cups of confectioners sugar with just a sprinkle of water, mix with electric beater/kitchen aid for 5-10 minutes or until frosting is workable, this frosting put in decorating bags works beautifully for shapes, flowers etc.
good luck

Also u can add diff food coloring to the recipe above to make it look good. Is there any other frostings though besides that basic one? I really don't like the taste, even though kids do. 8)

yes, I found a recipe that taste less like margarine and more like fresh cream:
1 cup shortening (crisco- whiter then marg and more subtle taste - although further from butter )
4 cups confectioners sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 oz whip cream (I think this is what gives it the lighter taste)
cream shortening until fluffy
add sugar, mix until creamed
add the rest of ingredients, blend well
beat on high until fluffy
Can add more whip cream (up to 1 oz) to make a softer consistency.

how about try whip cream with some pudding to make it a little stiff I did it once not sure of the measurments though but it comes out tasty and workable too without all that crisco or marg.

I've tried that recipe too.. use it sometimes as a quicker filling for cream puffs or eclairs. It's not too bad... but it doesn't get hard like butter cream, frosting

And whipping cream is also made from hydrated oils.
