AFAIK it's totally voluntary. DH has received $500 from some parents, more as hakaras hatov as the boy's Rosh Yeshiva, I would think. Not even necessarily when he shlepped out of town.
Recently he was given a Cross Pen.

we paid our rosh yeshiva but he never told us a specific amount. I don't remember the exact number, but it was definitely in the same ballpark, maybe even more, than what we gave our shadchan
