1. Was Mordechai Esther's uncle? In the megilla it's written: בת אביחיל דוד מרדכי
I've worked in many preschools over the years and have heard it being taught almost all the time that Mordechai was Esther's uncle. Is everyone making a mistake, or are there meforshim who say that Mordechai was her uncle?

2. Do the two items in mishloach manos need to be two different brachos? I remember once learning in school that it's a common misconception, but actually, the two items need to be two different types of food, not brachos, so for example, chocolate and a bottle of orange juice are acceptable for mishloach manos. Is that true? Do some people hold that it needs to be two brachos or is it a myth?

2. No, they don't need to be two different brachos, just two different foods.

1. Misconception. See e.g. https://www.ou.org/torah/machs.....ther/

However, there is one (tenuous) Jewish source for the uncle relationship: Targum Rishon on Esther, 7:6 in which Esther says "the tzaddik Mordechai brother of my father." It is especially perplexing due to the fact that Targum translates 2:7 and 2:15 in accordance with the pshat, that Mordechai was Esther's cousin.

2. Misconception -- e.g. both the Rambam and the Shulchan Aruch pasken that one may give two different types of meat for mishloach manos.

Conclusion: not quite all that we need to know was learned in kindergarten!

I've heard many opinions on how mordechai was related to esther

as well as back & forth with the 2 different brochos or 2 different foods

regardless the knowledge wouldn't change my life nor the lives of my shaloch manos

He was his uncle and cousin.
His brother married (escapes me) another relative.

I keep hearing two brachos but also often 1.
