My preschool son is great one on one... But at school he has a hard time following directions and interacting. I was thinking of getting him evaluated for an auditory processing disorder. What kind of dr does the evaluation? I've even told a developmental pediatrician or neuropsychologist but when I google it it seems like I should find an audiologist??
I'm in ny.
Also if he does have ADP.. What therapy helps? What can we do for him?

I'm not an expert at all but have you ruled out hearing problems? not the processing the simple hearing.

We have had hearing checked in the past, but a year and a half ago by ENT and all was good.

you need a basic hearing test within the past six months before the evaluation. also, your son is likely too young to be diagnosed, but they may conduct the test anyway if you really want it.

Preschool is too young to test for a true auditory processing disorder-which an audiologist would do at around age 6 or 7. However, if your child is not doing well in school and is falling behind, and you suspect he has characteristics of an auditory processing disorder, you can have him evaluated by a speech therapist who is very familiar in this area. If you're in brooklyn, you can contact Strivright at 718-531-1800. They will have someone competent in this area evaluate your child to see if he is indeed presenting with these characteristics.

Strive right told me they don't test for it before 7.

Fast ForWord can be done as young as 5 and treats APD.

But I'd first have a behavior or education specialist check out if there are other reasons for the difficulty.

Anyone know what kind of therapy is done for APD? Can kids with ADP be in a regular classroom?

Most kids with APD are in regular classrooms. The main treatment is usually classroom modifications to reduce the difficulty, but speech therapists also work on learning more effective listening skills to compensate. There are also exercises to train auditory processing, either dine by the therapist or via computer programs - there are several programs that are basic exercises, and then there's Fast ForWord which is the only one I know of that actually uses modified sounds to gradually develop the ability to distinguish regular speech sounds. It's a major difference in approach.

have you thought of having him evaluated through the Dep of Ed? Yes, it takes longer, but this time of year things move VERY quickly. And it is free. You can always do the private eval if you are not happy but why spend so much if you don't have to? you can get your child SEIT, OT, and speech. and if above five then not sEit , but p3. This if you live in nyc.

Were you denied services? Why are you seeking a private eval?

He has services but not geared towards APD. Board of Ed does not evaluate for that.
