I either give arts and crafts supplies or sports equipment (mitt, soccer ball). My DD received a baseball glove and ball at 6 and loved it.

or a make your own bracelet/necklace kit
sand art or some other craft kit
costume jewelry or makeup or nail polish (if the family seems the type to allow)
