Would you want a robot for a dealer at your poker table?

She has an hourglass figure, an unflappable manner and a friendly face. Meet “Min,” the robot whose creators say could revolutionize card-dealing in the world’s casinos.
The svelte brunette is a prototype of a human-like electronic croupier, which Paradise Entertainment Ltd., a Hong Kong-based gaming machine manufacturer and supplier, says could cut labor costs and open up new markets for casino operators. While her function is currently limited to dealing cards, planned enhancements could have her recognizing customers’ faces and speaking to them in multiple languages, Chairman Jay Chun said.

After making her debut at a gaming show in Macau last month, Min and her clones will initially be introduced in the U.S., where labor costs in casinos are proportionally higher than in Asia and where humans, but not machines, are prohibited in some states from working as croupiers. Paradise is talking to potential overseas buyers, Chun said, declining to say how much the robots will cost.
“We are the first gambling equipment manufacturer in the world that produces the human-like robotic dealer,” he said.
Avoid Embarrassment
Automated table games are a growing segment of the North American gaming industry, according to Christopher Jones, an analyst with Union Gaming Group LLC in New York. Installing electronic table games can help casino operators reduce their labor exposure on low-denomination games and during slow periods. Also novice customers may seek out robotic tables to avoid embarrassment if they make a mistake, he said.
While relatively novel in the U.S., robots will be viewed similarly to virtual dealers by regulators, Jones said.
Robots can be a good solution in gambling jurisdictions where real dealers are banned, said Carlos Siu, an associate professor at the gaming teaching and research center of the Macao Polytechnic Institute. Genting Malaysia Bhd.’s Resorts World Casino in New York state uses electronic table games to get around state gambling laws that bar human dealers, Jones said.
In Macau, the world’s largest gambling hub, machines are less likely to appeal. Asian customers are more inclined to gamble in a noisy and crowded environment, preferring to banter with dealers and fellow gamblers than sit in front of a machine that provides little or no engagement, Siu said.
“Gamblers often slam the table and shout loudly to pump up the mood,” he said. “I’m not sure if robotic dealers can tap into the gamblers’ psychology correctly and give an appropriate response.”

My dh says it's okay if you limit yourself. He sets aside $10 and that's it.

I suppose it's a good way to get people to the table who might be intimidated by a human dealer. One step up from a slot machine, because at least here you have to deal with other human players.

My personal opinion: I don't think potentially addictive games with high stakes are a healthy pastime for most people, no matter who is working the tables.

No. Nor do I buy lottery tickets.
Please don't be deliberately disingenuous. Playing dreidel for walnuts is in no way shape or form comparable to gambling.

Yay, so theoretically no problem with me facing 'Min'.

I'm actually quite pleased someone quoated Bloomberg article. AI is not a real phenomenum in chess, so not surprising this is applied to poker. Among other games, pokers are most mathmatical, ie you have better odds of beating the house if you have better mathmatical skills. I happen to know several quant-type friends who put themselves (or at least supplemented) through grad schools with odd poker tornaments here and there.

Like other activities, there are certainly risks of compulsive gambling with serious consequences. I find it quite interesting that those in the industry never refer it to gambling, but remove b and l and call it gaming.

I think it is only assur if you think you will win and\or bet more then you have on you.

When the twins from France Golden Fluff pogs were HOT the boys in school would play a game were they would 'bet' pogs.
I was disturbed and called our rav that it was gambling. He said:
- it is permissible if the boys physically put down the pogs before the round and know they may lose, at that point the pogs are no longer theirs. It belongs to the winner of the round.
- it is not permissible if the boys 'put down' pogs that they don't have physically on them.

I may have some details incorrect, but the idea is that within certain parameters it is permissible.

I was actually happy at the time my boys had that lesson. They would come home and tell me about others who lost all their pogs and then would offer up their pog collection at home until it was all gone. This gave them a stopping point (even with something as silly as paper pogs)

I believe all gambling whether with chocolate chips, money, or paper pogs fall in the same category.

This will not take off. Have you ever looked at the casino dealers? Most of them are dressed in a way to draw attention so the gamblers stick around for longer. This "Min" will never be able to replicate a live girl in a tight shirt.

Have you actually been at a poker table? Believe me, the guys are far more interested in winning than looking at the dealers, many of the female dealers are not really the attractive looking types, anyway you definitelly cannot see the skirt length or tightness from your seats!

I think you're mistaken with the waitresses who bring drinks.
