Wonderful news - so nice to hear that a potentially tragic story had a safe and happy ending! And thanks so much for taking the time to share the good news!

What a relief! These stories are so much scarier when you're a mother.

When I heard about it I was totally thinking about what school Shabbos was like when I was in high school....we went up to a camp, and girls wandered off to explore the area, the woods, etc....and it made me aware of how unsafe that could be.

I intend to have a talk with my girls before their upcoming school Shabbos.

This is so important...if exploring the woods with no trail it's imperative to leave yourself markers so you know the way back. After 5-10 minutes of straight walking in an unfamiliar wooded area, the average person will have no clue how to get back. Much better not to do the exploring at all...

As a teen I went exploring and managed to get turned around in about 15 minutes, despite taking note of landmarks to mark my way back. Luckily I glimpsed an electric line through the trees and followed it back. I met two young boys who were planning on "building a treehouse" and asked them to "guide me back" because I was worried they wouldn't make it out on their own. They pretended to guide me back (lol) but without that electric line the story might not have ended as uneventfully, for either of us.

Leaving markers is more than just taking note of a fallen tree or whatever, it involves drawing marks on trees, making piles of stones etc. every few feet. You need to be able to stand at one marker and be within eye distance of the previous or next marker.
