My twin girls are 9 yrs old and I am looking for ideas to convey the spirit of the day to them. I am home the whole day tomorrow and I know I will end up doing housework, chores, etc. I don't want them to think of the day as just a day at home while fasting, but am not sure how to bring it down to their level.... Any ideas! Please let me know what worked for you!!
Thanks and have an easy meaningful fast!!

I sit on the floor with my kids and we talk about things that we're sad about. Not having a bais hamikdash is mentioned of course, but I want to bring it closer to home so I ask them to think of their own things and tell them all sad things are because there's no BH.
It's only a few minutes but it sets the tone for the day...

That sounds good. What are the things you mention about the bais hamikdash?

I don't do this with my kids, but it's a great idea. I would mention things like
Im really sad my grandfather passed away a few months ago
I'm really sad there are so many bad people and bad things happening in the world
I'm sad that not everyone can have a cute baby like we have

Last year I showed my kids (about the same ages as yours) the documentary paper clips, it is a very gentle introduction to the shoah. We paused it a few times to discuss different aspects.

Make sure to mention that all the tragedies are in essence sourced back to the loss of the bais hamidkash as if we had the bais hamikdash we would have no tragedy/sadness.
