My all-time favorite book growing up was The Velvet Room by same author. I don't see it in print anymore, which is such a shame.....
At that age, I read all of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, The Three Investigators, Trixie Belden...don't know if that stuff exists today, outside of the book closet in my father's house.
The Borrowers series
I also liked anything by Noel Streatfield, like Thursday's Child, or the Shoe books (Skating Shoes, Dancing Shoes, etc....)
The Narnia series
The Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series
Someone mentioned Betsy-Tacy....my 8 year old loves those. And anything by Beverly Cleary - the Ramona series in particular.

Didn't read the whole thread so apologies if this was already mentioned.
Chinuch.org has a great book list...you can get ideas from them. Plus they rate them in terms of clean with notations of which issues the books have.
