I've done it a few times and lived to tell the tale Wink . However, there are different passengers every time, so no one here can really guarantee your safety.

Depends on the time, line and location. If you are talking about 9 pm on monday night to Midwood on the Q/B line then you should be fine. 2 am on Saturday night on the D line to BP is fine. If you are talking about 4 am to East New York on the 3 line, then probably not as safe. But always proceed with caution since this is NY after all and you just never know when someone may go crazy lol.

Should be okay, but use common sense, keep your eyes up and not buried in your phone. And for an extra layer, text somebody when you're about to get on. Also choose a car with more people in it, not an empty and deserted one.

Don't have your phone out. Have a book to read so you don't accidentally make eye contact with others, but do not get engrossed in it. Keep checking your watch if you have one (not your phone!) to show that you are aware of your surroundings.
