Mazel Tov on your new home! I do space planning but am in Baltimore.
Regarding pricing, I usually charge by project. Easier for me because then I don't need to track my time, and easier for clients because they can budget better — no surprises. Pricing is less "per house" than "per square foot" or "per room."

In my experience most interior designers charge by the hour.

Sure. I do space planning — that's layout, flow, ergonomics. Kitchens, basement conversions, additions, entire homes. You can get a good idea of what I do from my website, design613.com, and I'm running an "advertorial" in the upcoming Baltimore WhereWhatWhen which will come out in about a week.
Here is a screenshot from a current project, a whole house renovation...
Existing 1st floor:
New layout:
Changes include a completely different and much more functional and attractive kitchen layout (it's not a kosher kitchen if you're looking closely, and the old kitchen layout is not pictured in my "before" drawing), a reconfigured stairway because the existing one is dangerously steep, merging 2 bedrooms into one + a master bath, and making a family room, guest room, and laundry room in the basement (not pictured).
As the client looks at choices for flooring, backsplash, wall colors, etc., I put them into the file too. Thanks for asking!

Toby Fischer is amazing. Nice, cost sensitive and very quick.
