The review makes this look good? Has anyone eaten there? Is the review accurate?
Abraham Lefkowitz keeps his talents hidden at Café 28 — meaning you can’t see the deliciousness on display until you’ve walked all the way to the back of his two-year-old Kosher restaurant.
His small counters display a remarkable range of color and textures, from roasted whole peppers ($3.50) and baked salmon ($8.50) to individual vegetable soufflés ($5.50) and sesame-seed topped knishes ($2.50) whose thin pastry wrapper and small size make them some of the most elegant in town.
Bagels and rolls are among the baked goods at Cafe 28.
You can also choose your own bagel or bread from a tray of home-baked goods, then have it topped with whitefish salad or lox ($6.50) or avocado and egg ($6.50). By the front door, there are also cheese blintzes ($6), or gefilte fish ($5) packed to go.
Lefkowitz learned to cook in school in Israel, where he fed his roommates with his home cooking. Many of the recipes are his, he says, while some are from his staff, like the chopped falafel sandwich ($6), made by tossing crumbled falafel balls with diced pickles, sauerkraut and sweet peppers.
