Wat is the norm for little boys wearing cutesy yarmulkas with their names? At wat age does it become too childish?

Honestly, it's a safety issue. I wouldn't do it at all.
I also haven't seen it in recent years, except for the yarmalkas that have the letter the name begins with.

I happen to not do it anymore, but I don't consider it a safety issue at all.

I also never put a complete name on yarmulkes (or briefcases or umbrellas or anything that my child wears) for safety reasons.

In B.P. My kids wear with an initial until 9.
Or the beg. Of 3rd grade, and I wouldn't put the name on it for safety reasons.

Only on Imamother is this a problem! In my world, it's definitely done in primary school, maybe later. Myanswer would be as long as the kid wants.

Yeh, safety aside, your child will tell you when it's too babyish.
My DS told me he wanted a plain black kippa as opposed to one with a pattern round the side around 2nd grade. He said most boys in his class wear plain ones.
On a lighter note, my DH once wore my son's black kippa with gold pattern round the edge for shul. He got dressed in the dark. He was very embarrassed when he got home!
