Since you asked for the truth... I hate it! It sounds so old-fashioned, as I have a great-aunt with that name.
But I also hate the name Yehudis... So do what you like.

I never understood the name. Is it Yiddish for yehudis? A nickname for yehudit? A mispronunciation? Something else altogether?

Don't like it. It's a mispronunciation of Yehudit - missing out the 'heh'.
It can't be Yiddish, because then it would be Yudis with an 's' at the end not a 't'.

Yes - it's a prevalent (in Israel at least) contraction of Yehudit.
It's much quicker and easier to pronounce.
My sister's Hebrew name is Yehudit.
When we first made aliyah she decided to go by her English name because of the tendency here to swallow the middle 'heh'. She detests Yudit.

I know two very sweet Yudits, but because it reminds me soooo much of the german pronounciation I really dont like the sound of it

Well, it is the German pronounciation, it's written 'Judith' in German, I know more Yudit's or Yudi's than Yehudits, to be honest. But maybe that's more popular here.

Love the name. My niece is called yudit. She's the cutest girl
Dh grandmother till 120 is called yudit as well.

I don't have a problem with slurring the name Yehudit into Yudit, in speech. That happens, even though in my opinion it's less pretty. But to spell it like that from the start, is weird.
It's like the name Aharon - where people spell it Aron - I know lots of kids named Aron in England. Pronouncing Aharon as Aron is only natural - it slides off the tongue better, but to actually name them Aron, it's like calling them a cupboard!

AFAIK it's not generally given as a name lechatchila here in Israel.
At least not in non-haredi sectors.
The name is Yehudit and it just kind of devolves into Yudit, de facto.
I agree that Aron is weird to anyone familiar with Hebrew.

It's Jewish, not Israeli.
Yehudit was the heroine who cut off that Greek commander's head in the time of the Chashmonaim.
Also possibly a feminine version of Yehuda.
And the wife of Esav - never understood that one though!
