Because as long as the thread is fresh, there's curiosity and open-mindesness.
Somehow, as the hours tick by, there's growing pessimism, narrow mindedness and sadly, hatred.
Just my own observation.

Very often, wether the thread is about something in the news, a PSA, or even an innocent question it somehow turns into a full blown community/sect bashing in a matter of hours from when it was first posted.

The camp thread went on forever and was just as interesting in the first page as in the next few hundred. The last pages were a little tired.

Imamothers who keep posting on a long thread are by definition those who feel most strongly about an issue, so that's why, after a few pages, you're mostly getting extreme views . The moderates have dropped out.
Also, someone who asks a question and gets shouted down rather than answered is going to keep asking. Eventually the asking looks like accusation and bashing.
Just my observations.
