My step daughter is getting married in Monsey, NY in early January. We live in Los Angeles where it's most often hot. I rarely get a chance to wear a sweater. I'll be traveling with my 4 year old ds and 10 month old dd. PLEASE help me pack! What kind of weather should I pack for - dry & cold, rain & cold, light snow, heavy snow? I have to buy appropriate clothing & gear for the weather. I hate to buy so much stuff we will only use a couple days so I want to be as practical as possible. For example do I need to buy a snow jacket or can I just layer clothing for my kids? Do I need to buy snow boots or can I my DS wear rain boots? How do you dress your kids in Monsey in January? How do you dress your baby? All guidance welcome. And if you can provide links to any clothing online, that would be super helpful!

you will need warm coats and snowsuit for your kids.check out carters. dont forget hats and gloves/mittens. bring along sweaters incase the place you are staying isnt warm enough.

warm pjs or sweats is needed at night.

Snow boots is a must, rain boots will just freeze the toes. You can find inexpensive snow boots in target, walmart or carters.

My kids wear winter coats, hats, gloves. Snow boots if playing in snow otherwise shoes. Then they wear sweater or long sleeve teeshirt and regular long pants. My babies always had warm blanket in car seat along with a fleece sweater and hat. If your daughter is in regular car seat I'd do a warmer coat and hat. Sometimes it snows and it's always cold in January. Have a safe trip and mazal tov!

Perhaps there is someone in Monsey from whom you can borrow what you need arranged in advance. That's what I've seen.

This. It really depends how long you will be there too - if you will be there for just one or two days, you might be able to manage layering and running to and from the car. But not for a Shabbos...

If you are gonna buy, watch Amazon - they often have super deals on coats and stuff.

How much walking outside are you planning on doing, are Shabbos sheva brachos in Monsey, can you find out how close to the shul/hall you'll be sleeping.
A winter coat or snow suits with hats and gloves are a must if you're doing any walking, wait until December and you can get something cheap. No need for expensive down if it's for one Shabbos, you can layer a sweatshirt if it's really freezing. If you'll only be in and out of a car then a warm sweatshirt and a blanket for the baby is fine since they shouldn't wear coats in car seats anyways.
Rain roots with warm socks are fine if you're walking a block or 2. If you're walking a long distance snow boots are better.
My kids wear any long sleeve shirts and pants, no sweaters or anything specific for winter.

Thick warm socks under rain boots should be fine

Unless in and out of the car means driving right into and out of a garage I think the 10 month old needs hat and coat and probably gloves too. It can be bitter freezing. Coats are necessary.

Have you ever been there in January?

For how long are you coming?

Off topic but I'm curios how you feel about attending the wedding of a stepchild. I'm only asking because I am in the same situation and well... Things get sticky. Especially with my own young children involved and having to face the X. Hopefully you have it easier!

Its usually feezing here. Will you have to walk on shabbos? If so, prepare for the worst! If no walking you'll manage with coats from house to car.

Op here. Thank you SO much- this is really helpful. I have never been to Monsey. We will be arriving to Monsey Tuesday, wedding on Thursday and going to Lakewood for Shabbos... We leave Sunday. Is the weather in Lakewood similar? Our Machitanim or arranging for us to stay at someone's home in both Monsey and Lakewood so I don't yet know how much we will need to be outside walking and such.

To the amother who asked about how being a stepmom is during this wedding process - private message me. I'm happy to share but basically I'm fortunate because other people are helping A LOT, I'm not in charge nor making decisions - I can't, it would distroy the fragile relationship I have with my stepdaughter, and cause shalom bais problems! Also our Machitanim so far have been nice to "work with". Also there was money already set aside for this from a grandparent (we could not afford it). Also the biological mother is nifter. But I'm sure things will come up I'm stressed about. Anyway - pm me, it's supportive to discuss with other step moms!

You should really find this out before investing in outerwear. Can you ask your machiotonim what's planned.

A 10 month old can may get away with a hooded sweatshirt and lots of blankets, especially if in a car seat and going in and out of car, or in carriage, unless you will be out for a l

I have plenty of really nice coats and sweaters in the sizes you need. You can totally borrow and even keep if you want. I’m in Monsey.
