how do I check and what to look out for?

You look at each bean or whatever is supposed to be in the package, discarding anything else

NOT ALL RICE IS OK TO USE, EVEN IF ITS CHECKED
There are a lot of brands, but not all.

Please contact JSOR and ask

ALL KITNIYOT MUST BE CHECKEC 3 x.
Yes it's A LOT of work. To make enough to last you the whole week.
YOU MUST CHECK BEFORE Pesach.
If you run out too bad.

Also, if you are going into Brooklyn close to Pesach, it may be worth it for you to go to a grocery store near the Sephardic community and see what kitniyot products they have.

I've seen rice cakes, brown rice pasta, canned kitniyot, frozen peas,
A little more expensive than what you usually pay for during the year but not astronomical
For example, I remember the rice cakes were 3 for $10 - in my kosher supermarket in FL. -

Quinoa- I only buy KLP; ask your LOR about that

Re rice and beans, the custom is to triple check for anything that doesn't belong. Since chametz is light colored, I sometimes purchase black rice for easier checking.

I know there is a big Sephardic community in UK, call and ask.
The canned kitniyot in the US, I think, comes from Israel, so you may be able to find them in the stores in the Sephardic community.

Or don't even bother with kitniyot.
Lots of potatoes, carrots, turnips, Zuchinni, eggplant, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers,

There's lots you can do.

And if you want to minimize meat and chicken - eggs are a great protein option.

Just remember, Pesach is only 1 week, so your protein intake won't be as optimal that week.

Maybe you can find these in Israel, but in USA it needs to be KP Lesepharadim.
The beans in bulk is NOT Acceptable.
The JSOR - Jersey Shore Rabinical Council is a great resource. You can contact Rabbi or Mrs Farhi (she's an expert in kashrut) and ask them, sometimes things change from year to year.

Also, many don't use chickpeas because Chumus and Chametz are spelled similarly.

Regardless - kitniyot need to be checked 3 times, grain by grain.
I know many women that start right after Chanukah.
Pre checked rice IS VERY EXPENSIVE
$11-$12 for 16 oz.

Seriously? Rolling Laughter

I'm pretty sure they sell klp kitnios in the UK. eg Chummus. The miki chummus we buy before pesach is always KLP.

I presume (from your posts) you don’t have any experience with preparing kitniyot foods on pesach. Why don’t you ask your husband or mother in law / maybe a sister in law / how it’s done? It will be a lot easier to understand than random responses here. You can also call your Rabbi who no doubt knows how this is done.

CBB?

Why do you want to eat kitniyot?
Is all that work really worth it?
It’s only a week you can live with out it

My SIL eats kitniyot, so the first year DD was married I actually bought pre-checked rice.
I figured, 2 ppl, last 3-4 days of Pesach 1 container $11. Ok, for me it was worth the splurge. He didn’t eat it out of respect for our family.
BTW- his mother checks over 60 lbs of rice, 3x. She also grinds it into ground rice and rice flour. She starts right after Chanukah.

Checking rice is not a big deal. When I turned 12 it was my job every year to check 15-20 pounds of rice.
What cheap things do you make when it's not pesach? Our pesach and year menus are basically the same just no bread and cake ECT. (With some fancier additions but it's a bit more pricy)

Pour a few handfuls of rice into a serving platter. Move rice from one end to the next checking for any chametz. You don't have to remove all discolored peices- they are Not chometz (that's What I was taught). Repeat 2 more times, then pour into a ziplock. Repeat until the whole bag is finished! We use basmati rice.
Same process for beans.
