I got it! I know what you can get him! They sell it in Israel.
Its this really pretty framed sign that says
"Tzaddik Nistar" on it in Hebrew with an arrow pointing left.
Buy it, and hang it outside his study, on the right side of the door.
I know it'll definitely get a smile...

Gift from either spouse who goes on a trip, yes.
Gift for watching children, no.
It's also OK for a gift not to be a surprise and to ask "since I'm going to (or already at) X, is there anything from there (here) you'd like?"

The idea makes me smile.
But if I ever did that for my DH, he wouldn't want it where anyone else could see it; it would feel like gaiva to him.
To all those saying "his kids too", I agree, but over time, spouses divide up responsibilities. If DH normally does the family tax prep, and one year, you take it on in addition to everything else you already do, wouldn't you like that to be appreciated? Even though they're your taxes too?
Whatever small thing you choose, a note saying all the ways that you appreciate him is a nice thing too.

If one day I am meant to handle his duty I don't expect a gift.
A gift from your travel if very fine.
Not a gift because he watched his kids.
Better nothing than socks.

Gaivah?
Unless he thinks he's really a tzaddik Nistar, why would it be Gaivah? My guests would laugh if they saw it. They would never thing DH was putting a sign on his door to indicate his status in society? I guess we think differently.. If I ever came across that sign anywhere, the only reaction it would get would be a laugh.
Would a real tzaddik Nistar actually put up a sign? Nistar means HIDDEN. Lol!

I am one of those people who bristles when someone says "my husband is babysitting". But watching the kids for 3 days straight is not easy. On an average day in a two-parent home, parents can volley responsibility. Op isn't getting her husband a gift because he's owning up to his responsibility as a parent, she's showing hakaras hatov for his giving up his down-time for 3 days so she can something she wants to do.
And to any single parent Ima who is reading this, kudos to you for being "on" all the time.
