We're a young ashkenaz family from Far Rockaway looking to move to LA. For reference, we currently daven at the White Shul in Far Rockaway. So far we've been looking to move to Valley Village or Pico as they're supposed to be more affordable but even those prices are crazy high for a small home. I've heard that Sherman Oaks or Tarzana or Encino are even more affordable- can anyone advise what type of communities are in these areas? Are there a variety of shuls or only 1 type? Are there kosher supermarkets and restaurants?

Sherman Oaks is adjacent to Valley Village - the same Jewish community, so lots of shuls, restaurants and quite a few young families from NY area. Tarzana and Encino are definitely smaller and less developed in terms of Jewish life, but there is a community there as well.

Tarzana has a wonderful, growing Chabad community. Many young families and couples moving in constantly(Not a huge amount if families but it's a nice size). Everyone is very kind and welcoming at Chabad.

You would need a car to function in any of the locations in the Valley (or even Pico or Hancock Park) so actual location is moot except for Shabbos.
Less expensive is relative since Sherman Oaks and Encino are both expensive in terms of housing - Tarzana is somewhat less expensive since it's much further out.
