Hi,
A friend of mine said her chasuna was costing 40k! Very expensive makes me curious how much your chassuna cost.
Please tell also what you are (yeshivish/chassidish/MO) cause I think that is also very depending on the cost and were (I think Amsterdam would be more expensive then Boro Park for instance)

Sometimes these figures take into account gifts such as jewelry, furniture, and household items. 40k is possibly the combined cost for both sides which isn't shocking but there are communities where 50k per side is the norm. I admire Chassidishe communities that adhere to takanas but even then, not everyone has that kind of money.

First wedding in 2001 was approx. $15- 20k, included just the wedding stuff (no sheitels, no housewhere, no jewelry) just a basic MO wedding. Second wedding (over 10 years ago) was $3,000 and DH and I are Breslov but friends and family are all types from not frum - chassidish and beyond.
Eta - locations were not in NY/NJ, but in the States.

Made two chassunahs in Chicago last year, B"H. Each had about 300 people and the total cost was approximately $28K including everything. We split the cost based on the FLOPS formula, where the chosson's side pays for florist, liquor, orchestra, photography, and shaitel. I'm guessing we spent $15K-$18K on each, when all the little expenses were added up. We're yeshivish.

The range in these numbers is fascinating.
After the fact: was it worth it?

Lol, since they're twins, we had to try to make everything as fair as possible.
B"H, Druscilla's chassanah was first, and she married a young man whose family is also from the Midwest and had no more desire than we did to throw an over-the-top shindig. However, because there wasn't much travel involved, they had a lot more people from their side attending.
Prunella's chosson was from the Tri-State area, and while his parents are a bit fancier than we are, he was their eighth and last child to marry. I think they were well and truly worn out! His mother, who is very, very into flowers, spent a bit extra to upgrade the package.
Prunella's MIL is also very into jewelry, and Prunella lists to the left and may be blinding onlookers in Yerushalayim as we speak. But I didn't include that in the cheshbon. I figure it's their problem if they spoil Prunella.
