Every day I have to deal with either the computer freezing, necessitating me to do a forced shutdown without being able to save any work and having to recover documents, or the display suddenly goes black, again forcing me to restart. Obviously time is lost, and I can potentially lose information in the process; this is very frustrating. Is this normal?
I work in an office as an administrator.

Not normal.
My husband, the family IT guy, says to try updating everything, checking for viruses, and checking how much space you have left on the computer hard drive.

Not normal at all and very frustrating. I think you need IT to check things for you here since there are multiple issues that can cause this. It may s/t that can easily fixed like many programs running in background or a need for a larger processor, or it can be that you need a new computer because there are too many issues. I'd want to have a professional tell me which way to go.

Time to clean the computer
If it’s filled with lots of documents, programs and stuff it will slow down.
