Edited my title in Hope's of getting some more suggestions for Minneapolis and Cleveland. Also things in between Cleveland and NJ. (About half way)
Will spend about a day in each place. Tell me what's in the area to see/do with kids under 6, good food places, good places to stay. We will be going the end of July.
-The Twin Cities
-Milwaukee
-Chicago
-Cleveland
-Ottawa

Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland is fun with kids. Memphis Kiddie Park is also a good choice for that age range.

Ottawa has a nice natural history museum that's very interactive. There's a museum of agriculture that has animals. The Canadian Parliament building is closed for renovations, but there's other historical stuff to see. You can take a boat tour of the canal. If you don't mind a side trip, there's a Cold War bunker that's pretty cool.

Chicago - fountains in Millenium Park, the Bean, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, top of Willis/Sears Tower, Field Museum of Natural History, children's museum, fireworks on the pier, the zoo is free but not near all the other attractions

Thanks everyone. I've jotted down some notes of these suggestions. Also on the way between Cleveland and NJ, is there something to stop at half way? Jewish community? Or an activity or park on the way? Just to kind of break up the 7+ hour stretch.

Lake Tobias (not so cheap)
Hershey chocolate world is a free quick stop (depending on the length of the line)
Knoebels (no entry fee so stay as short as you want - but need more then one hour - may be out of the way)

Thanks sky. Silly question but is there anything we can buy that is pareve at Hershey? I went there as a kid but didn't keep chalav yisroel growing up. Wouldn't want to show them the tour and then be like "sorry no candy for you, everyone back in the car!" That seems cruel 🤣

Pittsburgh - Science Museum is amazing, needs more than 1 hour to see it all, but would still be worthwhile for whatever you did get to. A brief but unique Pittsburgh activity is the inclined railroad, google for more info.

Fyi, if you plan on going to several science museums it might be worth it to purchase a membership. Many of the science museums have reciprocal memberships that are covered under the original membership.

Licorice, jolly ranchers and other candies. We get a bunch of nosh
There is also a pareve choc bar that is expensive.
After the choc ride tell them you need nut/dairy free and they give a licorice instead of chocolate.

(Some of thememberships you can’t use if museum is too close to your home or too close to where you bought it. For this reason some people will purchase membership from a cheaper place across the country)

Don’t know how leisurely you want to make your trip but if traveling near Hershey there is a ferry that crosses the Susquehanna. It is an old!!! Wooden ferry that takes cars. It is out of the way to get there and takes some time but it’s an experience.
