I grew up in a community/at a time where we would never have given cash as birthday presents or Chanukah gifts, and certainly no child would ask for cash, it would seem gauche. For bar mitzvah and wedding it was different but not for children's regular bday gifts. Is this a new thing? My SIL and her kids, my nieces and nephews from that family, all just want cash when asked what they would like for birthday presents. This rubs me the wrong way but am I just being old fashioned? Is this really the new norm? Not that it should make any difference except 'culturally' but they are not observant.
