It took me YEARS to find it, but I buy them by the dozen and have one with me at all times:
Uniball Signo 207.

The one 4th from the left.
I like the old design better, but these are fine.

For really important documents, the quill I bought in Colonial Williamsburg in 1963.
Juuuust kidding. I didn't even like the Mont Blanc fountain pen my uncle gave me when I started grad school. I'm a ballpoint fan all the way.
Cross is too elegant for words but too skinny for comfort.
Uniball Signo gel grip isn't bad but has a scratchy sound for which I deducted points.
Papermate profile also isn't bad, extra points for the rubbery grip and retractability
My faves are Parker Jotters for fancy (I like the fatter barrel and the little click it makes when you lift it from the paper. Don't use it when taking an exam in a room with other test-takers, because then the sound is obnoxious to everyone else) and Classic Crystal BIC for plain. BIC writes smoothly and isn't too uncomfortable in the hand, and while I like retractables because there's no cap to lose, the barrel of the BIC classic stick slides easily into the coils of the steno pads I use for note-taking.

I'm not into names really. But I find BIC pens to be a very smooth flow. Somehow I like my handwriting better in blue ink.

Pilot Rollerball (precise v5) extra fine pen - blue ink. I love those.
But sometimes I go for the micro-fine Pilot Gtec Gel pen
