My kids like to imitate teachers, neighbors, friends, and relatives. Do you think this should be discouraged?

Depends if it’s disrespectful or not. I used to copy the accent of a favorite teacher of mine because I loved her.

For the most part, it does not come from a place of kindness.

It depends. I had a classmate who immitated a walk the camp head counselor had. She still has that odd walk now, many years later. It became a bad habit.

Was she imitating her or was this her way of walking too and she used imitation as a cover up?

Mocking is never appropriate. My ex used to do that to me in public, and it made me furious.
If they are playing a game, like "teacher and pupils" where they are taking on roles, then that's different. It's more like acting. As long as everything stays respectful.
Needless to say, do not EVER mock or copy anyone with a disability, lisp, or other impairment.
