So I don't understand something about Lag B'Omer.

We celebrate. We finally get to listen to music. It's a happy day, right? Why?

Because Rabbi Akiva's talmidim stopped dying.

Great. They stopped dying. Looked at a different way, that means that they had all finally died out. An entire generation of talmidim - all niftar. Adn it's a day of celebration?

I don't understand...can anyone clarify?

(I know that Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai passing on all his knowledge is another reason why we're happy today, but right now I'm trying to understand the Rabbi Akiva's talmidim answer.)

Maybe bc, as the loshon states I think, they were dying from a plague...well, the plague was over? That's worth rejoicing about?

That answer doesn't really satisfy me so much either...

I mean, I guess. It's just that the plague was over because there were no more talmidim to die; they were all niftar already, right? So it was kind of over by default.

Unless other people were dying during the plague as well? I thought it was just them. (And even so, I feel like there's got to be something more...?)

It's because the five who survived are the ones who transmitted the Oral Torah to us.
