Is there any hard rule about capitalizing Hebrew words in English? Somehow, many seem to take on the form of a proper noun when they are transliterated while not necessarily translating as such.

What would you do with the following words?

Bais Yaakov (not the name of a school, but the kind of school. A “bais yaakov”, a prep school, a yeshiva
Klal (he did much for the klal)
Names of Mitzvos (chesed versus Bikur Cholim?)
Bais Medrish
Middos like Hasmada, Tznius, Gevurah

I would check here: YU’s style guide, which is based off AP

I write for ease of reading and understanding, so I'll pick a visually familiar spelling over a more accurate spelling. I write Hanukkah instead of Chanukah, which looks clunky to the non religious reader. But I also write Yehudis rather than Judith.

I try to use English in English. You'll notice in my writing that I use G-d instead of Hashem, for example. Even when I quote a Hebrew source, I usually present it entirely in English.
