I dont know him or his family personally, so not really a family gift. also, cant really afford much. how do I show appreciation?

Flowers or a plant. Dh used to be president of our kids' school board, and every once in a while, a gift would show up. Dh was scrupulous about maintaining privacy, so I never knew what he did for people, but it did take lots of his time, and it was nice to see that people appreciated the effort.
