From my understanding, a blech is only suitable fand safe to use on a a gas hob. The heat distribution on an electric hob could go right through the blech and worse.....

I have done so for many years.
If it's a glass top, use an upside down cookie sheet. Do not cover the entire surface of the stove with a blech, or it can crack.
Keep in mind that the heat increases over time. You may need to keep it lower than you think.
