Your question is too broad. It depends on many factors such as your relative social status, whether or not you know each other, whether the relationship is personal or business, how friendly you are, how big was the service for which you're grateful ..."Thanks!" is a fine response to a text message from your cousin verifying that your grandfather's full name was Yehuda Aryeh Leib ben Binyamin Zeev Vulf or an email from a colleague reminding you that the staff meeting is tomorrow at noon; it's not appropriate for thanking the person who interviewed you for a job or let you stay in her apartment when you had to attend a wedding in another city.
Actually, Tx or TY are also fine for texting, which is an informal means of communication. Texting would be inappropriate in the latter two cases, which call for something more formal.
