Does you machine have a hand wash cycle? If not, I would only hand wash. Fill up a sink or tub with warm water. Add a tiny bit of detergent. Add the garment, swish it around, and rub gently on any spots that look dirty. Let it soak for 15 minutes. Then let the water out and rinse the garment repeatedly until water runs clear and there are no bubbles. Lay flat on a towel and press another towel over it to get most of the water out. Hang on a hanger that fits the garment well, make sure the fabric is smooth, and let dry fully.

Yes. Are you talking about something especially dirty? Like caked in cholent? If so, it may need more soaking and rubbing.

Personal experience, I put boys blazers in the machine on hand wash or gentle cycle. If you decide to physically hand wash, just beware that it is very hard to squeeze all the water out. Also, it does take a long time to hang dry, don't wash it on a Thursday night.
