I once sent something and got an automated response worded nicely that unfortunately they can't publish everything and can't always answer your email. They get a lot of submissions so I guess it makes sense. It is hard though especially when you've worked hard on something and it's personal.

They usually do answer but can take 6-8 weeks for a response. If you haven’t heard back yet, maybe they are considering it?

In my experience with (I think it was Mishpacha) once they accepted it, then they tell you they retain the rights and you let them know you agree.

Separately, the magazines say that you can only send to one place at a time.

But not that they retain the rights if they don’t accept it. They just don’t want you sending to three magazines at once. You have to do one at a time.
