Hi,
We are considering making Aliyah from NY in the next couple of years.

We have 4 school-age children.

Are all schools free tuition, or is it only select (ie. does it depend on public v. private schools, or is the Israeli school system totally different to US in that way?)

Also, college education - is it more affordable than US to attend college? Do students generally take out large loans?

Thanks for your input.

What type of school are u looking at? Basically most mamads are free, beis yaakovs usually very cheap (100-300shekel a month). I pay 380 shekel a month in jeru for cheider. Theres a huge range.
University costs but isnt crazy expensive. A few yrs ago I was paying 10,000shekel a yr. Most students worked part time to cover fees

We are so early in our plans that I can't say I know exactly what we are looking for. We are looking for a daati leumi school (not beis yaakov/cheder type), and currently send to a modern orthodox school in NY.

I assume you are talking about religious schools only.

The answer probably varies by "sector" (DL or charedi, etc.).

IME, for mamtachti dati schools

- Public religious schools (free, although there are minor book fees, fees for class trips, etc.)
- Semi-private religious schools (IME, tuition can be anywhere between 5000-12000 shekels/year for mamlachti dati schools and yeshivot)
- Private religious schools (no idea)

Universities are way less expensive than in the US. I don't know anyone who takes out a loan to pay for university.

So then you will most probably be looking into the mamad system.
Elementary school is mostly free. There are a few fees here and there. Maybe 1- 2k shekels a year.
High school depends if its dorming or not.
We pay roughly 4k shekels for the local mamad girls high school. Dorming makes it quite a bit more.

Personally, I don't either, but the banks offer loans for university, so some people must utilise them.

If you do the army or sherut leumi, you get a grant that partially covers your university fees.

Mamad elementary school - very minimal. Maybe 2,000 shekel a year?
Mamad boys High school , no dorm - 12th grade is most expensive and we paid 6k shekel last year. The earlier grades were cheaper.

University was under 10k shekel a year for my DD, IIRC. They also don't require the payment in 1 lump sum.
We were able to spread out the payments and didn't have to take a loan, but I'm sure your child could if he/she had to.

My son who served in the army got a grant for university and he's also working at the same time (when we're not in a war) so he's actually paying for university himself.

Thank you, this is helpful.

What does mamad refer to? Is it a specific kind of school?
