Multi-level marketing. Infamous companies include Shaklee, Amway, Herbalife, Avon, Tupperware and others. You make the biggest money not by selling a lot but by recruiting others to sell. The more people you recruit, the higher you climb in the hierarchy. You get a percentage of what each of your subordinates makes. Fewer than 25% of people in MLM companies make money. At best they break even. The poor schnooks at the bottom often end up losing money because they have to buy the marketing materials and bear all the costs of travel, phone calls and so on. Although presented as an easy way to make money in your leisure time, this is a lie. You have to really hustle to make anything.

So true, I have a few friends who worked their sweat for some promising MLM. It's a ditch you shouldn't walk into
