Maybe you can use a bit of hairspray to stick the sides down

Velvet band does not have to be tight. The one I wear has elastic in the back and it's very comfortable.

What is the actual halacha? which hairs need to be covered?
I have a slight widows peak and side burns (not heavy enough that I would remove unless halachically necessary) right now my tichel is covering the tops of my ears and I still have hair sticking out.

Anything that comes out past the ears is considered hair from your face not your head and does not need to be covered.

Also including this is any neck hair in the back.

For some reason very few people are taught this.

This is true, and according to the halacha.

There are also women who cover every last hair for kabbalistic reasons. I shave my peot and hair at the base of my neck and always wear a full sheitel outside. Chabad.
