This is a new years gift plus a thank you for getting me the job, so looking to spend around $100. This is a middle-aged Nigerian man, married, but I don't know anything about his other interests. Last year, when I interned with him, I got him a bottle of whiskey. He already has a desk name plate. I would prefer something I can get on amazon, because after Thursday I won't be in the same location as him so will be harder to give to him (unless ship directly there), but personalized stuff that takes longer is welcome too. Thanks!

Amazon gift card
Personally I would not want to give something personal to a man.

I don’t know what field you are in or if he is considered your boss. Are you sure there is no conflict of interest and it won’t make him uncomfortable?
I just got a gift from a subordinate. I legally had to return it and everyone felt bad/awkward. Would have been so much better if the woman would have read the police and just wished me a happy holidays.
A $10 Starbucks/DD gift card would have shown the same hakarat hatov and been acceptable.

A pen that's engraved with "thank you". I once got my boss a Mont Blanc that said "Thank you, Mr Smith" this was after working for a few years and I was leaving the company.

A mug that says world's best supervisor or some other message.

- A good quality insulated mug, hot and cold.
- A reading lamp.
- A combination alarm clock / wireless phone charger.
- An external battery pack for his phone.
These are extremely impersonal, but useful gifts, that should be easy to regift if the recipient is not into them.
Oops, sorry, didn't see the $100. These are all less. But maybe someone else will be able to use them.

Something like this. I wouldn't give a gift card to a boss. Other options: nice travel mug, umbrella, pen set, or something related to one of his hobbies for his desk (ex: baseball player bobblehead). You could get a heated mug like the ember mug/next mug. The next mug is about a hundred.

I had a similar scenario and I found out what his favorite resteraunt was (cheesecake factory) and got him a gift card there.

I heard that you're not supposed to gift up at work.

I had this once, and had to give. I got his and hers mugs for him and his wife, so it wasn't just from me to him. Nothing too expensive.
