I hate when people ask "how does everyone afford...", but alas, here I am wondering how do people afford summers???? Day camps/sleep away camps/ going upstate etc... which have become standard even though their price tags are clearly meant only for the wealthy!!! How???? My daughter has friends going to camp for a full summer, 2 different camps for each half of the summer, which will cost them nearly $8,000 for 1 child for 2 months!!! And they send a few to camp. And this is very common.

Obviously they have more $$ than you...or they get a big tax refund and they use that for camp or they saved up the whole year $1,000 a month or $500 a month if they're sending three kids for a half of Summer. Also don't forget that many schools only charge tuition 10 months so if you plan ahead you can put that money from june/july or july/august aside a year before for camp
If I couldn't afford it, I would do the following things:
1) Don't send to sleepaway. They are plenty of girls that don't go and work.
2) send her as a mothers helper
3) send to a cheaper camp
4) send only half summer ( I don't know where you live but where I live in Lakewood no one sends a whole summer).
There are a few camps that have scholarships but I doubt it's free.

people have money. Different people have different stories, some maybe families help, some have low expenses overall and this is expensive so they afford it. I don't understand this question at all.

Scholarships, HSA, family help, budgeting, etc.
Also don't assume that there aren't a lot of people going into debt for things like this

So I think my question is actually different, not how do people afford it, but why did it become the norm that summer is so expensive?!?
