I haven't lived on the Lower east side in over 40 years- I have to pass through the area- are there still frum clothing stores there and kosher food stores?

I remember being taken to Orchard Street as a child.

There is a wonderful scene in a Herman Wouk book in which an even earlier "sale" on Orchard Street for his first suit as a BM boy.

But Orchard Street is now all hipster bars and restaurants :-).

I sometimes feel that way too but then think that for the same reason I don't live there anymore I should be happy that fewer people do too. If I don't want to live there anymore why should I want anyone else to? If the LES was such a wonderful place for frum families there would a larger number of them there. So would the amenities.

It actually is a wonderful place to live for frum families. The main reason the community has gotten so small is the very high housing costs. Many people want a house and backyard if they are spending that much money. The stores were dealing with very high rents and a dwindling customer base and over time things closed down.

I still miss living on the LES. I think it was a wonderful place to grow up.
