Can we discuss Short stories we read in school.
The Pearl
The Monkeys Paw- how did the son come back? Disfigured? I always wondered
What's the one with the guy dying in the wax museum cause he thought the wax figure came to life?

I recently told dd the story of the pearl. I wonder if she'll read it too in HS.
12 angry men.

Love animal farm!
Read it in 7th grade, then reread it and did a 25 page research paper on it in college
It’s beyond fascinating (and super applicable to today)

Is the pearl the one about the necklace?
The gifts of the maggai or something like that
12 angry men (and then we got to watch the movie, lucky us!)

So no one can explain the ending of the Monkeys Paw?
I was always left feeling unsatisfied

The author deliberately leaves the ending of The Monkey's Paw ambiguous. Possibly the son would have been all mangled and gory. Or he would've looked like a zombie. Or maybe he would have appeared physically normal. We don't know. In fact, maybe it's not even their son and it's someone else entirely knocking at the door. The point is, they need to accept that they can't get their son back. The mom is holding onto a delusion that they can change things back to the exactly the way they were. The dad knows they can't. Whoever, or whatever, it was at the door is irrelevant.

I know it's not the point. But it always gave me chills

Definitely, leaving it ambiguous makes it more chilling. If the author had written "The father looked through the peephole and saw his son looking bloody and gross with ripped clothing and groaning like the undead" it would lose the haunting aspect of not knowing exactly what's out there on the doorstep.

A court case for a murder. The 12 angry men are the members of the jury. It's a play, not really a short story

I remember the story vaguely. What was the story about?

I'd love to read Tale of 2 cities as an adult. If I wouldn't be on imamother perhaps I would have the time.

Hated The Pearl. It was depressing and you just knew things wouldn’t end up well for the main character.
I loved A Tale of Two Cities, although I should probably reread since the details are fuzzy.
