Signed up to pray for soldier they sent me name Ben father... This is new to me! Is that common practice?

Some do daven this way. A relative gave their son's name ben father and when we inquired they said we can do it ben father and mother...

1. Many names that were formerly masculine are now unisex in Israel. In the past year I have had classes with girls named Daniel, Gabriel, Emanuel and Noam.
2. Whoever submitted the name may not have known the mother's name.
3. I seriously doubt that a prayer is any less effective because the person was identified with the "wrong" parent. The KBH knows whom you mean. Your kavanah is what counts.

I have been asked to pray for someone ben/bat father in a case where the the mother wasn't Jewish but the father was. The person had converted as a child...not sure why it wasn't ben/bat Sarah which is what I thought was standard 🤷♀️
