I've been using Golden King Buttery Golden Potatoes from Tesco in North West London. I don't know if they are available in Stamford Hill. But they are not Tesco own brand, so they may be available in other supermarkets.

all the reviews on potatoes are really not good.

I know, they seem to have reduced their bag sizes. Not impressed.

So interesting to see this thread as I haven't been happy with the quality of potatoes for kugel recently either.

Does anyone remember it always being like this at this time of year?

The last few times I made a big batch kugel I used the ready peeled from just ripe which are Vivaldi potatoes but the lot I made 2 weeks ago wasn't great. Maybe it is to do with the season

I'm finding this fascinating. Does it mean that British kugel tastes different than US kugel? I use idaho potatoes Smile

It's definitely due to the season. I find every year there are 2 months or so in the winter where the potatoes are just no good. I usually use the asda marabel or vivaldi sainsburys which are similar. The Asda ones keep changing names, but they are the same thing really even with a different name. (the package also still looks the same- called extra special)

A month ago they were awful, but my last batch (2 weeks ago) was brilliant, not sure about this week.

When I lived near Stamford Hill I used Maris Piper to make kugel; actually I used them for roast potatoes too and found them very good.

I only buy the large yellow sack from the heimeshe shops. I find they are the best for kugel. Cyprus has a very earthy taste.

Ive been told numerous times that my kugel is delicious.
I use
5lb potato
6 eggs
1/2 onion
1 plastic cup oil
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp black peper

If the mixture is not wet enough I always add a bit of water to give it more moisture. The trick of a good kugel is a wet batter.
