I’ve been using candles in my leichter all the years and the wall and ceiling above them turn gray and ashy over time. I would switch to oil or something else if it burns cleaner…

Electricity. Seriously, any fuel will give off some smoke, even if you don't see it, and if you always light in the same place, the soot will eventually build up and smudge the ceiling above. The more candles you light, the faster it builds up.
Janitorial supply houses sell something called a dry sponge which is used in cleaning up after house fires. If you can get your hands on some, you can clean the sooty surfaces. However, it may be easier to just paint the room every few years.

Thank you! I was wondering though how lighting with oil or something else compares with candles.

I like parafin better. It’s clear liquid and has a reusable wick. Can get at local grocery stores

Thank you. I’m scared to use paraffin because of the dangers of having it around young kids.

I use candles and haven't had issues with soot on walls/ceiling. I do leave space between the leichter and the wall and the candles are not very high up.
Maybe try moving your setup a little to leave some breathing room...

Why is it more dangerous than wax or oil?

It’s a clear liquid that’s very dangerous if ingested. A child can get hold of it and drink some
