This is posted for the Lubavitch community. I do think it's relevant for other communities especially for Yaffed apologists.

I appreciated it even though I'm not Lubavitch at all.

Summary for those who can't watch.

1. No one is stuck. If you think limudei chol is important for your kids, then you SHOULD have them taught limudei chol, either in a different school, or after school. A parent should do what he/she believes is best for his/her kids, even if it's not the most Chasidic thing.

2. People who are concerned about limudei chol are usually concerned about parnasa. Parnasa is important, but not as important as health, shidduchim, and yiddishkeit, even though unfortunately most people worry more about parnasa than they do those other things. Jewish Chinuch is really about learning to be a good Jew, not parnassa.

3. Jewish education has been around for 3,000 years. Public secular education has veen around for maybe 150? Keep in mind and don't assume that the new is necessary. *

* My own footnote. According to my brief research, Jewish public schooling started by Shimon ben Shetach who lived around 2,000 years ago. Before that, a father would teach his son. Shimon ben Shetach observed that those without fathers would not learn, and not all fathers were able to teach, so he came up with the Jewish public schooling system, which started around age 7. This was still not the cheider which started at age 3.

(But teaching something for parnassah isn’t done either. This argument would work if you don’t teach science and math but teach plumbing.)
