My close friend's mother is in a coma. She is brain-dead and at this point there is no hope that she will ever recover. I heard about it through the community, and I think it would be right to call her even though the mother hasn't passed away yet. What does one say when there is no hope to offer?

Offer words of comfort without false words of hope. I'm so sorry you're going through this, this must be so hard for all of you, how is the rest of your family doing, is there anything I can do, etc.

Ditto to what Clarissa said. One Don't do is to say "it's gonna be fine".
