My 5 year old ds is such a sweet child. He is usually a pleasure, but when he is overstimulated or lacking sleep he will ignore what's being asked of him. He will ignore when told to get dressed, get off the couch with shoes, clean his toys etc. I usually ask the bare minimum of him when he is in this mode but today he was holding something I needed and he refused to give it to me. Flatly said no and waved it around, I was forced to physically take it from his hands.
Even though this doesn't happen that often, now with yom tov and lack of sleep it's an every day thing.

How can I stop this?

Unfortunately typical. Try to get him into bed earlier.

Don’t overthink it. Just physically do what you need to do when he’s like that.

When you're not in the minute, u can try talking to him and tell him it's very important that he listens the first time. U can even set up a chart or reward system. Or even come up with a secret code word. Kids that age love it. Like if u need something right then you'll say, watermelon and he'll do it and answer Cantaloupe. My 5 year old thought this was hysterical and we didn't tell her sibs what it means so she felt very important about it. Got us thru a vacation when she was acting overtired.
