Hi,
Wondering is anyone here has any insight for me... A family member bought my daughter a ticket using miles (she was buying one for her own daughter too, they will be traveling together, and that was more economical for her). I want to pay her back but how do I know how much to pay? That same flight currently has no economy tickets left--it would be $2,000 to book now. The equivalent flight the next day is currently available for $1,300...
Any ideas?
TIA!

AYLOR. May be a major issue of Ribbis.
- Should you pay the price that the ticket would have been in cash?
- The approximate cash value of miles (something like 2 cents per mile)?
- The price the ticket would be on the day you pay back?

A fair price would probably be how much the miles would sell by a broker (generally 1.1-1.2 cents per point for most airline miles) unless the regular cash price for the ticket with a couple of weeks advance purchase is cheaper, in which case I would give the cash price.

Value of ticket, minus some, in my opinion.

There's usually a cash price when you book with miles.
Did she not see that when she booked?
What airline?

Depends on which miles.
United vs Chase vs Capital One vs Jetblue
The 1.2 is usually for Chase

We've done that before and we've paid the value of the miles, so if they were valued at $1, and we bought 500, it would cost $500 (this isn't accurate but it makes the math easier).

This type of deal is generally best when figured out in advance.
That said, AYLOR if there are any Halachic considerations to take into account when coming to an agreement

We based it on the price at the time of the booking and paid a slightly lower price as the person using miles had a lot and wanted to use their miles and get the cash but we were losing the cc points we would have gotten had we bought the ticket ourselves.
