is it too early to build the succah?
is there a good reason why people dont put it up till after rosh hashana? or is just procrastination?
I'd like to build it now to get it out of the way before the yom tov cooking rush begins.
yes, I'm making part of the sukkah so I want it to be done way before I have to cook for rosh hashana.

You can make it when you want. Starting after rosh hashana is not procrastination. People want to enjoy their property outside this time of year like their porch rather then staring at a succah for a month. There really is no law when to build it.

It could be (not sure) that you have to build it within 30 days before, to show it's for Sukkos. But we're already there

My father always built our family Succa before Rosh Chodesh Elul (when the new z'man starts in yeshiva) so that my brothers could help him!

I think there are 2 reasons people build their succahs so last minute:
Spiritual: There is a minhag to start putting up the succah on motzai Yom Kippur to start the new year off with a mitzvah.
Practical: The later you put up your succah, the less chance there is of it getting dirty, rained on, or blown over.

My father holds from that. Not everyone has time thought to start then though. Some do it when they have time or some are so hard to built and takes a lot of time.

I am nudging DH to get to it... or at least lay out the panels in the right order and direction and get the bolts ready, the drill, etc.
I'm due on Sukkos, so whatever we can get done way in advance is great.

We built just the wooden frame, and its very strong so no fear of blowing over.
I am making the walls out of cloth, and sewing velcro straps to attach the cloth to the frame, so I wanted the frame up early to give me time to measure it.
doing it all after yom kippur doesnt give you much time this year.
we considered buying an EZ ready made succah, but then I realized that we could make our own for a fifth of the price, and then it would at least fit our porch properly.
the reason I am making the walls out of cloth is b/c we dont have much storage space for boards, and cloth folds up into just a bag.

the rule of doing it motzei yk is not to start but to do something in the succah, like my dh does the light and and hangs up a few arts...
we dont build the succah now, rather after rosh hashana.. just so I like to be on my porch..

That's the one job I let dh do and don't get involved in the timing. We have a really large sukkah and he needs to have a full day off in order to work on it. Guess it'll wait for the next free Sunday.
