Even though, in the first exile, the trials of slavery were a necessary ordeal to go through before the Jews could receive the Torah, one may ask why the Jews had to undergo physical suffering when they could have experienced instead the spiritual labor of learning Torah.
In a similar manner, with regards to the length and the harshness of this last exile, even though it is necessary for the profound revelation that will occur when Moshiach comes, the exile can still be replaced by the spiritual labor of learning Torah.
